CHARITY CYCLE RIDE 2011

12th of June????? It was more like the 12th of December. The rain lashed down and the wind howled. But, remarkably, 20 hardy souls turned out to ride and raise £200 for local charitable use. It doesn't take a genius to work out that many gave more than the basic entry fee of £6- thank you all very much. Donald Jack, our eldest rider (79) who did the 30 mile route last year decided that discretion was the better part of valour and restricted himself to the 20 mile route which he finished in under 2 hours.
We have to thank Fyffes for supplying us with the bananas for the pit stop. There were far more than we could use. So, the excess went to a Refuge where we know they will be truly appreciated.
Gazette readers may well see an article about the event sometime during the next week. A reporter and a photographer turned up at the start just as one of the riders was placing her pet puppy in her pillion pannier to take it on the ride. He enjoyed it. So did she.
As far as I can tell 12 did the 10 mile (time to come clean - it's actually 14 miles) and 20 mile routes. 3 did our traditional 30 mile route while 5 had a go at the new 33 mile route. All returned safely, some steaming gently while others shivered. There was the usual complaint about "hills" from a certain quarter. But, you have to realize that if you are going to ride the Downs there are definitely going to be Ups.
A couple of the riders asked if we would run the event again later in the year. I would love to say yes. But the Club has a fairly full and varied programme of fundraising activities throughout the year and our membership is not large enough to allow us to take on additional commitments at the moment. If you are interested in our other activities you might like to take a look at the rest of our website. We will of course run the event again next year in May or June so look at our Events Calendar early next year.

Once again thank you all for your continuing support.
