Business and Social Activities

Business

The Club is run by the Board of Directors which is made up of the President, Secretary, Treasurer, Chairman Fundraising and Chairman Welfare. The Board meets monthly, or as needed, before the Business meeting. The President may call upon other members to attend if there are special matters to be discussed.

The Business Meeting is for all members of the Club. It is held on the second Wednesday of each month at the British Legion in Old Basing at 8 pm. It is the meeting at which all decisions are taken or ratified by the Members.

The Fundraising Committee meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the British Legion at 8 pm.

The Welfare Committee meets in the Ex-Services Club in New Road on the first Tuesday of the month

Comment: Sounds like a lot of meetings. But, our meetings are pretty knockabout affairs which are conducted with great good humour and admirable despatch. It is amazing how much is achieve in relatively short meetings.

Social

We have an informal dinner meeting every month at some venue chosen by the Dinner Secretary. Members and their partners attend if available.

We have a fairly formal Dinner Dance once a year in April or May to celebrate the Club's Charter Anniversary. It is usually attended by the Mayor, ex-Lions and supporters of Lions.

A Christmas dinner is usually organised for some suitable date in December.

The Lionistic Year spans 1 July to 30 June when new officers take over. This is a good excuse for a semi formal dinner at which the "Lion of the Year" is named and the chain of Office handed over to the new President after which things tend to degenerate.

We are twinned with the Lions Club of Alençon with whom we exchange long weekend visits over the Whit weekend. It is a great weekend. But you need stamina and intestinal fortitude to survive intact. The weekend ends with the annual BBQ and boules match for the Jean le No'ach trophy. We have won it for the past 4 years.
